Roma Street Parkland is now a part of Brisbane

Description

The world's largest sub-tropical garden in a city heart is the latest triumph for the Department of Public Works which had responsibility for its creation from design right through to the landscaped plantings.

Some 435,000 work-hours and $72 million transformed the old Roma Street railyard into Brisbane's 16-hectare green space, incorporating Albert Park.

An estimated 450 jobs were generated during the park's 12-month construction.

More than 100,000 shrubs, 1200 mature trees, 1800 unique specimens and 350 palms have been planted in the living, growing spectacle.

Roma Street Parkland includes a one-hectare lake, waterfalls, playground, a variety of gardens, walkways and bridges.

It also showcases artworks by 16 Queensland artists, including a traditional Indigenous ground design. Roma Street Parkland is an integral part of the State Government's strategy to provide green open space in the city and City West precinct.

Once the meeting place for the Turrbal people, Roma Street Parkland has now become a meeting place for people of, and from, all nations.
