Indigenous Relations

Indigenous Relations supports the Queensland Government’s agenda for reconciliation through the delivery of the Department of Public Works’ Reconciliation Management Plan 2007-10 – Working towards Reconciliation.

Through the implementation of the department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Training and Employment Strategy, the unit works toward increasing the employment and development opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the department.

Effective partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and other government agencies have enabled the unit to establish the department’s Indigenous Communities Traineeship Program.

To further develop mutual understanding and respect, this unit ensures that cultural heritage is maintained on construction projects and cultural awareness raising programs are delivered to staff and contractors.

Assistance is provided to the Director-General in his role as Government Champion for Palm Island.
