Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Work and Study Assistance

The Department of Public Works has a series of programs that could take you from high school through to management, with entry and exit points along the way.

You could:

Education-to-Employment Scheme

The Department of Public Works may provide financial assistance to Indigenous students completing years 10, 11 and 12. If you are successful in obtaining an Education-to-Employment scholarship, we will pay school expenses and provide work experience leading to an apprenticeship or traineeship with the Department.

These scholarships are coordinated by the Department of Main Roads, with the Department of Public Works taking part as a sponsor. The scholarships are promoted in schools, with application kits available at the beginning of each school year.

The Department of Public Works offers these scholarships to students wanting to pursue careers in fields such as building and construction, administration, policy development, information technology, finance, marketing, management, purchasing, printing and fleet management.

National Indigenous Cadetship Project

The National Indigenous Cadetship Project (NICP) is a Federal Government initiative that improves the professional employment prospects of Indigenous Australians. It links Indigenous tertiary students with employers in a cadetship arrangement involving full-time study and work placements.

The Department of Public Works sponsors cadets studying in fields relevant to us, such as architecture, engineering, quantity surveying, business, commerce, management, marketing, finance, law and human resource management.

If accepted, mentoring, work experience and financial assistance is provided while you complete your degree.  On completion, you will be considered for our graduate employment program and for further career development.

To register for a cadetship, log onto www.nicp.dewr.gov.au.

Graduate Employment Program

This program provides career opportunities for people with tertiary qualifications.  We encourage Indigenous people to apply.

The Department of Public Works employs graduates from a wide range of disciplines including project management, engineering (structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, environmental), town planning, communications, architecture, property, building and quantity surveying.  In addition, we employ graduates in information technology, business, commerce, management, marketing, finance, law and human resource management.

The Graduate Employment Program combines full-time employment with on-the-job training.  As a graduate, you would be contracted to the Department for a fixed period of one to two years.

For more information contact Graham Waldron.

One of the Department’s' business units, Project Services, also recruits graduates from the engineering and architectural disciplines. For information on Project Services' graduate needs, contact Peter Borserini.
