Indigenous Communities Traineeship Program

The Indigenous Communities Traineeship Program began in 2009.

The program provides opportunities for eight Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who reside in remote Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities to undertake a traineeship and obtain ‘Certificate 11, Repairs and Maintenance in Indigenous Communities’.

The traineeship will provide foundation level skills in several areas of general construction, with the outcome of a general trade assistant. The skills obtained will enable graduates to move into an apprenticeship, should an opportunity arise.

Trainees will be employed by local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Councils. Mentoring and support will be provided by the Department of Public Works’ Indigenous Relations Unit.
